Advice for support people

Supporting women in labor is a crucial aspect of providing compassionate and effective maternity care. Here are some ways support people can aid women in labour:

Emotional Support:

    • Encouragement: Provide positive affirmations and words of encouragement to boost the woman’s confidence
    • Active listening: Listen actively to her needs, concerns, and feelings, validating her experiences.
    • Be present and attentive: Offer a comforting and reassuring presence during labour
  1. Physical Support:

    • Comfort measures: Assist with positioning, massage, and other comfort measures to help alleviate pain and discomfort.
    • Hydration and nutrition: Offer water, ice chips, and snacks to keep the woman hydrated and nourished during labour.
  2. Communication:

    • Advocate: Communicate the woman’s preferences and desires to the medical team, ensuring her birth plan is respected when possible
    • Facilitate communication: Help the woman understand and communicate effectively with healthcare providers, ensuring informed decision-making.
  3. Education:

    • Preparing for labor: Attending a calm or positive birth course together is a great way to ensure you both understand the physiological process of birth
  4. Breathing and Relaxation Techniques:

    • Teach and guide: Assist in practicing breathing techniques and relaxation exercises to manage pain and stress during contractions.
    • Remain calm: Model a calm and composed demeanor to help the woman stay focused and relaxed.
  5. Create a Comfortable Environment:

    • Set the mood: Adjust lighting, play soothing music, or use aromatherapy to create a calming and comfortable atmosphere.
  6. Offering Comfort and Reassurance:

    • Gentle touch: Provide gentle touch, holding hands, or offering a comforting embrace.
    • Reassure and praise: Acknowledge the woman’s strength and reassure her that she is doing well.
  7. Postpartum Support:

    • Support breastfeeding: Encourage and assist with breastfeeding, providing comfort and guidance.
    • Emotional support: Continue to offer emotional support and assist with the transition into the postpartum period.
  8. Respecting Boundaries:

    • Be attentive to cues: Recognize when the woman needs space or a change in support and respect her wishes.
    • Communicate openly: Foster open communication to ensure the woman feels comfortable expressing her needs and preferences.

Remember that each woman’s labor experience is unique, and the support provided should be tailored to her individual preferences and needs. Effective support can significantly contribute to a positive childbirth experience for both the woman and her support team.
